CLASS NEWS....
April showers bring May flowers...well, we are hoping!!! April was a very busy month. Here are some of the highlights:
Four chicks hatched. We named them Elsa, Anna, Fluffy and Olaf. They are now living at Miss Maither's house and may come back for a visit. On Earth Day, April 22nd, we had a visit from Cindy Saucier, She taught us how to identify and take better care of our trees. She also explained what it means to do composting. She has a lot of worms that help her, too!!!
We are very interested in animals and how to take care of our pets. We made a Veterinarian's Office in our class and Dr. Lackie will be coming to visit May 5th. The Ottawa Humane Society came to visit April 28th and we learned a lot about caring for our pets at home. We even got to meet Pinkerton, a therapy dog from Limoges.
We are reviewing 2D shapes and how to identify 3D solids in the world around us.
REMINDERS:
Education Week: Please come to see our artwork displayed in the gym and in the Kindergarten hallways on Thursday, May 8
Class Trip: Tuesday, June 3 (all day) Environmental Farm

We had a lot of fun with the chicks, and sad to see them go. But right now, they are at Miss. Maither's house, and they are quite loud now! Hehe... She will be bringing one or two back when they get a bit bigger, so everyone can see how much they have grown!
Spring Time Fun!!
From chicks hatching, plants and bulbs sprouting, Easter 'Hop Into Spring' outdoor festivities, to meeting Riley's new puppy and a hair salon day with Tayla's mommy, Mrs. Burns...
We are all in awe of the 3 baby chicks that have hatched so far: Elsa, Olaf and Fluffy. Perhaps by the end of the day we will have another...

Spring has sprung in our Kindergarten Class!
Our Chicks & Hens Station is keeping everyone busy. More eggs arrive each day at our pretend hen house. We are collecting the eggs, keeping a tally and picking the 'Hen of the Day'. Some of the contenders are: Bluey, Silly Hair and Hattie.
After much pretend play and practice, we decided to begin the process to hatch some real eggs using our school's incubator. Miss Maither worked hard to set everything up and we know her experience and knowledge from growing up on a farm will be very helpful in the next few weeks. A possible 12 chicks may hatch on or around April 16 (21 days). The count down is on.
Come to our Market! Fruits and vegetables can be sorted, labelled and sold daily at our mini-corner market. The baskets and grocery cart are quickly filled. The cash registers dings with each sale and the exchange of coins and receipts makes for our busy market workers.
Farm Toys from the Maither Homestead arrived just today. Students helped dust off and prepare the toys for a making our own farming community in class. Toy animals and buzzing tractors spread across the carpet as we began to help Miss Maither set everything up.

The children were able to step outside and look and listen to this huge, beautiful pileated woodpecker! Quite a site!

WINTER OLYMPICS
It is almost as though everything else stopped for the excitement over the Olympic Games this year. We made the Olympic Rings, a Canadian flag for our class and celebrated with our own mini-olympics day where we peaked your little one's interests in Curling, Hockey, Broomball, Luge, X-Country Skiing and Carry-the-ice-cube-on-spoon. We were so happy the weather co-operated and we were able to enjoy a full afternoon outside with hot chocolate to warm our bellies.
We cheered on Justin King's cousin, Phil Brown from Toronto (Downhill GS). Justin was very pleased to show us a great picture and hat from his cousin, too! Miss Maither brought in her snowboard gear for all to try on inside. With great balance the children wobbled the board around the room with ease.

POLAR BEAR ADOPTION!
February has come and gone and we have had so much fun! After much deliberation, we voted and adopted a Polar Bear from WWF this month. We received our certificate and miniature bear this week and will continue to monitor the well-being of the bears. Thank you for sponsoring this project for your child! The children named our little stuffed bear Poly!
We have been concerned lately as the bears have wandered inland in search of food. Miss Kelly brought in an article (Ottawa Citizen, Feb.5/14)about the hungry polar bears eating almost all of the eggs from an eider duck colony near Baffin Island. The climate change is affecting the bears and now the birds, too! Lots for our future minds to consider and seek out much needed solutions.

Valentine’s Day Party & Card Exchange:
We plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a few sweets and treats for our afternoon snack. We will also make special envelopes for collecting valentine cards exchanged with our friends.
IMPORTANT:
Please have your child sign only his/her name on each valentine card. (This is a great
chance for them to practice printing their name!!!) Each child will need 29 cards. They may bring them to school starting on February 6th and we will deliver one to each classmate’s envelope before our Valentine’s Day Party. Envelopes will be sealed and sent home to be opened with a parent.
**PLEASE DO NOT PRINT CLASSMATES’ NAMES ON THE VALENTINES.**
THANKS!
The Olympics
We are excited as the Olympics are about to begin! Please encourage your child to share with the class any newspaper clippings or internet links that are related to the Olympics. We will be planning our own Olympic events shortly. We will let you know the confirmed date ASAP.
New Homework:
You may have noticed a new format in the homework books this month. Please let us know if it is more helpful in this format or how we might improve or simplify it for you.
World Wildlife Federation & Adoption Funds:
Thank you for sending in your donations towards our soon-to-be adopted WWF animal. The children are keen to select a Canadian animal for our class. We will be voting by the end of the week and let you know the results!

Just a few reminders as the holidays approach:
- We will be sending home indoor shoes with the children. This will give you a chance to verify if the shoes still fit comfortably and/or need cleaning or repair.
- Please check that your child has a warm change of clothes for the winter season in his/her school bag.
- Extra socks and mitts, too, please.
- The Book-in-a-Bag green folder will be kept at school. We are going to send a fresh set of books home January.

- We will be starting a new focus study in January: ALL ABOUT COLD......BRRRRRR!!!! We will ask students to tell us what they know about things that are cold; how to keep things cold; where in the world it might be cold; etc. Be sure to check in on the website to see how our study unfolds throughout January.
- We are gathering boxes for an in class project in January. If possible, please drop off boxes of all shapes and sizes during the first week back to school in January. Thanks!!!
PLAYING HOCKEY/IN THE SNOW!!!
Here we have our little elf on the shelf...She is Mrs.Troubleson and she started by just watching the children, but then I think she got bored at night and has been up to no good! Here she made a snowman with our baking ingredients! :)
Gingerbread Hunt:
The children followed clues to try and track down the gingerbread man, we were close, but we just got some nice notes from him! We also had a gingerbread cookie to taste after our hunt! Yumm!!! :)

READING BUDDIES!!! :)
We were talking about The Lorax and trees last week. This tied into our 'forest' in the classroom, as well as Movember!!! Monsieur Leblond is participating in Movember, so we all cut out Lorax moustaches and took a picture with him to support this cause! Don't we look good!?
HIBERNATION TIME IN KINDERGARTEN:
Boys and girls worked together to create a den or cave for their Teddy Bears. They were told they could choose any bin of objects in the class to help them build a den. We saw some very creative ideas. Bears were placed carefully inside each den the next day and we all snuggled down for a few minutes of hibernating ourselves.

FRUIT SALAD ANYONE?
We made a giant fruit salad for our Teddy Bears' Picnic. It was yummy! Most of us picked out of our cups our favourite fruit to eat first. Others ate it all up. Thank you to all of our parents for sending in the fruit ready to share.

Our October/Halloween month! It sure was a busy one! We made goop, made some Halloween patterns in Math, made a pumpkin man (Pete the Pirate!). We also made cookies, played in our Halloween store, in the sensory bin with corn and had a great day on Halloween, playing a ghost game and wrapping a friend like a mummy!! Thank you to the parents who helped out that day and came and saw us all dressed up! :)
TAKE ME OUTSIDE DAY!!! At McDougall Park!
Some of our friends peeling the apples for the one pie!!
Rolling out the homemade dough! So fun!
Pouring the apple filling into the pie crust.
Cutting the dough around the edges....
Then, onto the pumpkin pie!!!
The final result (before baking them). It was a great activity on Thursday, the day before Thanksgiving holiday, and the children that has never tired pumpkin, enjoyed trying something new!!
Miss Maither surprised the children with her pet dwarf rabbit, Smoke. We are now on the search for our very own class pet. Stay tuned for more news in the near future...
Our nature walk around the 'big school yard' revealed lots of treasures. The children squealed with delight, especially over the Black Walnuts!! We came back in to the classroom and identified, sorted, and labeled our finds.
